If you know Australian motor sport, you know Colin Bond. During the 1960s and 1970s, the man dubbed 'Mr Versatile' drove a Mitsubishi Colt in bush rallies, won several NSW hill climb events, and was the only man to win the Bathurst Enduro as well as national championships in touring cars and rallying.
Colin has now agreed to be a patron of the NRMA Classic Car Club. "We'll be at all the events they put on - the ones we can get to, of course!" he says.
He says NRMA's reputation was one of the reasons he agreed to come on board. "They obviously assist an awful lot as far as motoring is concerned. Also, we've always liked the older cars anyway, so I think it will be nice to be involved and see what happens out of it."
Classic Car Club members will be able to meet Colin at certain events. The racing champion has owned plenty of cars in his time, although he has "nothing that classifies as a classic car as such" at the moment. Perhaps something will catch his eye at a show and shine…
"I used to like the old racing cars," Colin adds. "One of my mates had the best collection of Lotus Formula One cars in the world. I used to drive those of course."
He is still very much involved in modern racing. For 10 years he was a 'driving standards observer' for V8 Supercars, which he describes as being "like a TV umpire for football".
"When we were racing there was no such thing as driving standards, because all the cars were different and so on," he explains. "But now with all the cars being equal, they've come up with some rules. We didn't make the rules; we would come as the umpire. They like someone to do the lot so you get a consistency in the ruling. So it was looking at any incidents between two drivers on the track to determine if there is a breach of the rules and if there was you might give the person a drive-through penalty or do something later on."
He is now on the CAMS track safety committee and on the day we spoke to him he had just been out to see the temporary course at Homebush, which will host the V8s in December.

There are now more reasons to smile. While Roadside Assistance remains at our heart, NRMA Membership now means so much more.
