Giving youngsters a jump start

Hand Brake Turn, which operates in Gosford on the NSW Central Coast, is sponsored by NRMA Motoring & Services. It's about giving disadvantaged young people a real opportunity to get their lives on track, and carve out a successful pathway for the future through a career in the automotive industry.

As a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), Hand Brake Turn gives participants the opportunity to complete an automotive course and graduate with a Certificate 1 in Automotive. It offers TAFE-accredited hands-on training in motor mechanics, spray painting, panel beating, detailing and workshop safety.

The program helps young people get 'work ready' by offering them work experience and advice to help them perform well in job interviews. As well as helping to improve literacy and numeracy, and linking them to employment and further education.

NRMA Motoring & Services directly supports Hand Brake Turn through its scholarship program which provides Hand Brake Turn graduates with a weeks work experience with NRMA MotorServe and a day on the road with an NRMA patrol.

Robbie and Ben with Hand Brake Turn Manager Brian Cooper and representatives from NRMA

Robbie Threadgate, 17, from The Entrance and 22-year-old Ben Holmes from Doyalson were the first graduates to be recently provided this opportunity from NRMA.

Both Robbie and Ben came to Hand Brake Turn after needing a change in their lives and now have the confidence and skills to be able to apply their training into their future.

"I have enjoyed my time here at HBT so much, I don't want to leave," said Robbie.

"The NRMA Scholarship has given me an opportunity to use the skills I've learned and also to learn new ones. It opens up opportunities for employment or apprenticeship, which means no more welfare, some independence and a career doing the things I've wanted to do for a long time.  I'll also get experience in a proper, professional working environment," said Ben.

For more information on the course please contact Hand Brake Turn in Gosford on (02) 4323 6309 or Hand Brake Turn Head Office on (03) 9416 1104.
