Passionate animal conservationist, Suzanne Medway from Brighton Le Sands has been announced as the Environmental Volunteer winner in this year's NRMA Helping People Awards.
The annual NRMA Helping People Awards recognise the hard work and commitment of volunteers working for charities and not-for-profit organisations across NSW and the ACT.
The awards cover four categories; Senior (Age 60+), Environmental (25+), Community (25-59) and Young (16-24).
NRMA Motoring & Services Deputy President Michael Tynan said he was pleased to announce Ms Medway as this year's Environmental Volunteer Award winner for her extraordinary efforts volunteering at the Wildlife Preservation Society of Australia, WPSA.
"Ms Medway is one of those inspiring people who go the extra mile to help out their community and take the initiative to make a difference," Mr Tynan said.
"Australia’s wildlife needs more dedicated champions like Ms Medway who put all their energy into helping without thought of material reward."
Ms Medway has been a leading volunteer of WPSA, Australia’s oldest preservation society, for the last 22 years. She has worked tirelessly to develop WPSA's website and magazine and has recently taken on the role of mentoring university students so they can learn from and contribute to the work of the Society.
Ms Medway was nominated by friend Pam Parsons, who said Suzanne was always extremely busy writing letters, editing WPSA's monthly magazine, attending monthly meetings and doing anything required.
"Suzanne's goal is to save all the animals in the community and she always goes above and beyond to try and achieve this goal, Ms Parsons said.
Ms Medway will receive $5000 to support the work of WPSA and a well-earned break to WA for two people, including five night's accommodation at the Travelodge Perth Hotel and return airfares from Sydney.
A Southern Sydney resident last won the NRMA's Environmental Volunteer Award in 2008 when Peter Vaughan from Como received accolades for his work with the National Parks Association (NPA).
The four NRMA Helping People Award winners will be presented with their trophies and prizes next month at the NRMA's Head Office in Wynyard.
