Motorists are being encouraged to keep their engines cool this summer after new research from NRMA Motoring & Services revealed breakdowns caused by cooling systems increased by one-third in the heat.
NRMA patrols tended to more than 62,000 vehicles for cooling system problems last financial year prompting calls by NRMA MotorServe General Manager George Rollas to remind car owners to have their cooling systems checked.
"We received up to 2,000 (33%) more calls for overheating cars from November until March, followed by a steep decline in the cooler months," Mr Rollas said.
"Cooling system problems are the fifth most frequent reason NRMA Patrols are called to Members after flat batteries, lock-outs, wheels/tyres and electrical issues.
"Car owners who don’t look after their cooling system risk further damage if they ignore the signs of their car overheating. Sometimes the costs can run into the thousands.
"Many drivers routinely check their oil and battery levels, however coolant is often overlooked.
"There should be a 50/50 balance of water and coolant in the radiator, depending on the make of the vehicle. If you don’t know what mix is in your vehicle, we recommend having the cooling system flushed and topped up."
