April fools price hike

April fools price hike

Author: NRMA MediaDate: 08 March 2008

A 50 cent price hike on the Eastern Distributor and Cross City Tunnel on the same day will leave motorists feeling like they are part of an April Fools Day joke.

NRMA President, Alan Evans, said motorists were unlikely to see the funny side of the 1 April Fools Day price hike of 50 cents on the Eastern Distributor.

"It was only a few weeks ago that Sydney motorists were slugged with a 50 cent price hike on the Cross City Tunnel - now this?" Mr Evans said.

"Between these seemingly endless toll increases and the daily shenanigans of profit hungry petrol companies motorists in Sydney must be feeling especially harassed.

"These increases and the recent interest rate rises are going to hurt families.”

Mr Evans said the State Government and toll operators needed to show some goodwill towards motorists if they were going to continue to subject them to these toll increases.

"Toll operators in Sydney have become quite good at yanking up the toll price by 50 cents every couple of years," Mr Evans said.

"However, when it comes to encouraging motorists to adopt the electronic tolling system the State Government and toll operators just go missing," Mr Evans said.

"They should be making their electronic tags free for all motorists - it's preposterous that motorists are forced to pay a deposit on a tag just for the privilege of driving on their motorway.

"A flexible casual pass that can be used on all toll roads is long overdue and we are not seeing enough being reinvested into the Motorways through better line marking and signage.

"The time for giving something back to motorists is long overdue."
