Blacktown kids learn road safety

Author: NRMA MediaDate: 11 January 2008

Blacktown kids are having a ball learning about road safety in a fun and interactive way these school holidays at NRMA's hi-tech, road safety exhibition in town until 27 January at the Westpoint Shopping Centre.

NRMA Community & Sponsorship Manager Brad O’Hara said NRMA RoadZone would target road safety issues through interactive exhibits and raise awareness about how to stay safe on busy roads.

"NRMA are pleased to be able to bring this exciting exhibition to Westpoint Shopping Centre, Blacktown and to support Blacktown City Council’s road safety initiatives for children in 2008," Mr O'Hara said.

"NRMA wants to help young people develop an awareness of the risks and challenges of being a pedestrian, cyclist, passenger and a driver.

"It's a shocking fact that nearly half of all last year’s trauma admissions to NSW hospitals were the result of road trauma and more than a quarter of these were aged 15 to 24."

NRMA RoadZone features 13 exhibits. Popular exhibits include:

  • Key’s please - listen to what each character tells you about what they have drunk at a party and then decide whether they should have the keys to drive home.
  • Stopping distance - see critical differences between stopping distances in wet and dry conditions.
  • Design a helmet - design a helmet and then test whether it meets Australian Standards.

Mayor of Blacktown Cr. Leo Kelly launched NRMA RoadZone at Westpoint this week and welcomed the initiative to improve road safety for local children.

"NRMA RoadZone is free to the public and the entire Blacktown community should take the time to see the realistic road-safety exhibits," Cr Leo Kelly said.

"NRMA RoadZone has travelled extensively throughout regional NSW and the ACT. In the past two years 140,000 children, parents and community members experienced the exhibition and learnt more about road safety issues in a fun, thought-provoking and high interactive manner."

Highly visual shows run all next week from Tuesday until Saturday at 11am and 1pm and at 5pm on Thursday.
