Fifth Player Could Help Bring Petrol Prices Down

Author: NRMA MediaDate: 30 January 2008

Introducing a fifth player to compete against Australia's four oil giants could make Australia's petrol industry more competitive.

Responding to comments made by ACCC Chair Graeme Samuel on Today Tonight last night, NRMA President Alan Evans said a fifth player in the industry must be coupled with the appointment of a Petrol Commissioner with real powers to punish oil companies that rip motorists off.

"This latest development shows yet again that a rejuvenated ACCC is no longer prepared to let Australia's four major oil companies take advantage of Australian motorists - the ACCC is finally prepared for a fight on behalf of all Australian families," Mr Evans said.

"Introducing a fifth player into the Australian petrol industry could help bring prices down, as long as the fifth player doesn't adopt the same habits currently being displayed by the existing four major oil companies.

"A fifth player in the market must come at the same time as a Petrol Commissioner who has the power to catch, shame and punish any oil company that rips off Australian motorists.

"Australians are sick of petrol prices being shrouded in secrecy and prices being higher than they should be - we need a Petrol Commissioner who can ensure greater transparency and fairer prices for all motorists".
