One of Australia’s top selling family 4 wheel drives, the Toyota Kluger, has received a five-star safety rating by the Australasian New Car Assessment Program.
In test results released today by the NRMA and the Roads and Traffic Authority, the Kluger received a five-star rating following a series of crash tests under ANCAP’s independent testing regime.
Director of the RTA’s Centre for Road Safety Dr Soames Job said the five-star rating demonstrated that the automotive industry was producing more cars where occupants are much less likely to be injured in crashes.
"It is disappointing however that some cars are not meeting world best practice and are only rated as three stars," Dr Job said.
"Toyota is to be congratulated for the Kluger achieving five stars."
NRMA vehicle safety expert Jack Haley said the Kluger provided a range of safety features as standard right across its range including front airbags, side airbags, head-protecting curtain airbags, anti-lock brakes, electronic brake distribution, electronic stability control, a rear view camera and seat belt reminders.
Dr Job said that both the NRMA and the RTA were disappointed at the Kluger’s poor one-star pedestrian rating which could be dramatically improved.
"On a good note Toyota has advised that future production models will be designed to meet the new Global Technical Regulation on pedestrian protection," Dr Job said.
