NRMA Motoring & Services has welcomed the NSW Government's move to start a free shuttle bus service in the Sydney CBD from midday today.

NRMA President Alan Evans said the NRMA recommended a free CBD bus service in its submission to the government's Mobility Summit in October this year and fully supports transport initiatives to keep the city moving.

"It's great to see the government has taken the NRMA's recommendations to combat city congestion seriously," Mr Evans said.

"With the busy holiday season in full swing CBD commuters, shoppers and tourists will be particularly appreciative of the free CBD Shuttle.

“This service will make it easier for more people to use public transport instead of battling the city traffic in their own vehicles."

The NRMA identified a number of other public transport initiatives to increase mobility and decrease congestion in Sydney's CBD including:

  • More Park and Ride facilities.
  • Improvements to bus lanes to reduce confusion at key intersections such as Elizabeth and Market Streets.
  • The introduction of bus tunnels to improve bus access for key areas such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Wynyard bus/rail interchange.
  • Cycle hubs at key CBD locations which contain secure lockers, laundry services and showering facilities.
  • Integrated public transport services and ticketing.
  • Provision of real-time travel information.
  • The addition of a bus shelter in Druitt Street at Kent Street for Victoria Road.
  • More visible bus shelters throughout the CBD.

Mr Evans said the CBD shuttle bus was a step in the right direction towards making it easier to travel around the CBD.

"The NRMA welcomes the opportunity to assist the NSW Government in keeping Sydney moving."
