NRMA Director and swimming legend Dawn Fraser is urging grandparents to make sure their grandchildren are placed in the proper child restraints in the car.
Ms Fraser is urging all parents and grandparents to comply with the new Australian seatbelt laws for children under the age of seven.
"Grandchildren love riding in the car with their grandparents - my grandson Jackson spends lots of time with me on trips to swimming lessons and the park," Ms Fraser said.
"As a rule Jackson always rides in his own child harness and restraint in the back seat of the car – it’s the only way to make sure he is safe in the car.
"We want all carers - parents and grandparents alike - to make sure they use the right child seat in the car and not to let their young ones ride in the front seat if they’re under the age of seven."
Ms Fraser said the NRMA welcomed the new seatbelt guidelines for children under the age of seven and urged the government to introduce the legislation promptly.
"The NRMA has been campaigning hard to see these laws are introduced because too many children are being killed or injured in crashes unnecessarily," Ms Fraser said.
"These laws need to be introduced as quickly as possible and they need to be coupled with a comprehensive education campaign targeting parents, grandparents and carers of young children.
"Too many carers are unaware of the right car restraint to use for their children or that young children can not ride in the front seat.
"We need to make sure everyone is aware of how best to keep children safe in the car."

There are now more reasons to smile. While Roadside Assistance remains at our heart, NRMA Membership now means so much more.
