It's Time For NSW To Match Funds On Pacific Highway

Author: NRMADate: 02 June 2008

Tomorrow’s Budget commitment of a combined $613 million in funding from the Federal and State Governments will help improve the safety of the highway.

NRMA Motoring & Services Director Wendy Machin said while the funding commitment was welcome it was time for the State Government to match the Federal government’s $2.4 billion AusLink II commitment.

"Almost two-thirds of the Pacific Highway is still to be built to an acceptable standard – this isn’t going to happen by 2016 if the State and Federal Government’s maintain their current funding commitment," Ms Machin said.

"Until we see a significant injection in funds from both governments a dual-divided Pacific Highway from Hexham to the Queensland border will remain little more than a pipedream and more lives will unnecessarily be lost."

Ms Machin said the community also deserved a clearer outline of exactly what funding commitment the State Government was making to the Pacific Highway.

"The State Government announcement of $613 million for the Pacific Highway this year is a combination of funding from both governments - that’s not what the people of NSW want to know," Ms Machin said.

"The NRMA wants to know what the State Government’s commitment to the Pacific Highway is as a stand-alone amount. We want them to clarify how much they are actually spending."
