More Than Meets The Eye : NRMA 'Transformer' Launched

Author: NRMA MediaDate: 24 October 2008

In a first for Australia's largest roadside assistance business, NRMA Motoring & Services today launched three state-of-the-art Member Response Units (MRUs), capable of transforming from a patrol vehicle to a transport vehicle in a matter of minutes.

Local NRMA Director Michael Tynan said the addition of these units presented an opportunity for the NRMA to improve the way services are delivered to Members through investing in technology. "The MRU vehicles allow patrols to attend to a Member's vehicle and if they identify that the vehicle requires further mechanical work the patrol can transport the vehicle to an approved repairer, an NRMA MotorServe, get the member home or to work safely or somewhere else they may need to go," Mr Tynan said.

The introduction of the MRU is not an indicator the NRMA is entering the towing market.

Mr Tynan said the goal of a roadside assistance patrol mechanic was to get a vehicle started and safely back on the road, with transporting a vehicle being a last resort.

"In fact, 92 times out of 100 our patrols get a vehicle started and back on the road," Mr Tynan said.

"The transport unit accessory will be used as required. Think of it like a new accessory on a Swiss army knife - an additional feature to an already outstanding product.

" The three new vehicles will initially service the Sydney metropolitan area. By the end of the year, nine vehicles will operate across Sydney, Newcastle and Canberra.

The transport units were manufactured in the United Kingdom, sent to Australia and fitted to a Mercedes Vito van. All other modifications to the vehicles were completed locally.

Mr Tynan said the units were cutting edge in roadside technology and would provide the NRMA with the ability to help its Members in more ways than before.

"The new vehicles clearly fit with the NRMA's new More4Members philosophy," Mr Tynan said.

"In addition the MRUs have the facility to carry an additional passenger and are set up to even take a baby capsule if required.

"Roadside assistance patrol mechanics have been through specific training in the deployment of the RDT (rapid deployment trailer) ensuring safe and efficient service will be delivered to our Members."

There are now more reasons to smile. While Roadside Assistance remains at our heart, NRMA Membership now means so much more.
