The NRMA has today written to the Petrol Commissioner and demanded he take action against oil companies for charging almost 20 cents per litre more for petrol on some parts of the North Coast in comparison to Sydney.
NRMA Motoring & Services Director, Wendy Machin, said average prices in Sydney on Tuesday 5 August had dropped to 144.9 cents per litre while some towns on the North Coast were paying average prices above $1.60.
This included Kempsey with average prices of 162.3.
Prices in Taree (157.5), Port Macquarie (155.9) and Grafton (155.7) were also too high in comparison to metropolitan prices.
"This is an outrage," Ms Machin said.
"Crude prices have fallen more than $25US per barrel in three weeks yet motorists on the North Coast have seen practically no fall in local petrol prices.
"This is exactly why the Petrol Commissioner was appointed and families on the North Coast are today looking to Pat Walker to pull the oil companies into line."
Ms Machin said prices on the North Coast should be at least 10 cents per litre cheaper and should continue to fall as long as crude prices do the same.
"If the Petrol Commissioner does not have the powers he needs to deliver fairer prices for North Coast families - and I suspect he does not - then he should call the Assistant Treasurer today and demand stronger powers," Ms Machin said.
"The North Coast is sick of the oil companies and their dubious behavior - it’s time Mr Walker cracked the whip."

There are now more reasons to smile. While Roadside Assistance remains at our heart, NRMA Membership now means so much more.
