New Ford Fiesta Rates Five Stars For Safety

Author: NRMA Media Date: 23 December 2008

Tuesday 23 December 2008: Results released today by the NRMA Motoring & Services reveal Ford has added another 5-star safety rated car to its stable - the 2009 Ford Fiesta.

NRMA Vehicle Safety Expert Jack Haley said the new Fiesta - which received the 5-star rating under complementary EuroNCAP crash tests - has joined the Mazda2 as a 5-star vehicle available for less than $20,000 under the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP).

"The Fiesta received a 5-star rating for those vehicles fitted with the optional safety pack which is standard on the Fiesta Zetec and 4-stars without the safety pack," Mr Haley said.

Mr Haley also announced 4-star ratings for the Mercedes Viano and Mercedes Vito under the EuroNCAP regime, which uses the same crash testing protocols as ANCAP and other similar crash assessment programs around the world.

"It's great seeing a 5-star safety rating for the Fiesta and we look forward to seeing other small vehicles shooting for the same safety rating," Mr Haley said.

"The Mercedes Vito van added to a growing list of 4-star commercial vehicles and there is no longer any excuse for tradespeople to be driving around in 3-star vehicles or worse. We hope to see the first 5-star rated commercial vehicle in 2009."

The new Fiesta, available on the Australian market from 1 January, scored well in the frontal offset and side impact crash tests, with the passenger compartment and structure holding its shape well. The safety pack includes Electronic Stability Control, which is a prerequisite for a 5-star rating under ANCAP's protocols.

The ANCAP 5-star Fiesta models join other ANCAP 5-star cars in the Ford fleet - the FG Falcon, Mondeo and Focus.

The Honda Accord Euro, which also received a 5-star rating, is currently available on the Australian market and performed well with passengers protected and the compartment stable under the crash tests.
