New NRMA Board Director Fears For Commuters

New NRMA Board Director Fears For Commuters

Author: NRMA MediaDate: 10 March 2008

The newest recruit to the NRMA Board, Coral Taylor, is warning motorists using Epping Road that traffic conditions could be chaotic when the bus lane is introduced today.

"The NRMA has been campaigning against these changes since construction of the Lane Cove Tunnel began because we saw what happened when surface changes were made around the Cross City Tunnel," Ms Taylor said.

"There should be no changes to Epping Rd until traffic volumes in the Lane Cove Tunnel reach the levels predicted in the tender.

"The Lane Cove Tunnel patronage levels are slowly on the rise but they are nowhere near the levels they need to be before we introduce these surface changes.

"NRMA members in Sydney’s north and north-west fear they are about to experience their own Cross City Tunnel."

The NRMA has notified the RTA of its solution for Epping Rd:

  • Changing the bus and transit lanes to a T2 transit lane. The current proposal for a T3 transit lane leading into a bus lane and then changing to a T2 transit lane is inconsistent and deters people from car-sharing.
  • Widen the general traffic lanes, which have been squeezed for the new cycle path.

Ms Taylor said the decision by the RTA to scrap the additional lane for motorists and build a $7.5 million cycle lane was surreal.

"The NRMA is not against cycle lanes - but to build a cycle lane for 25 cyclists at the expense of 35,000 motorists who use Epping Rd is nonsensical," Ms Taylor said.

"If motorists who pay tolls, registration fees and fuel excise are sitting in the middle of a car park watching cyclists intermittently cycling by they will be understandably frustrated.

"We need a commonsense approach to this problem – it should not be a case of one at the expense of the other."

There are now more reasons to smile. While Roadside Assistance remains at our heart, NRMA Membership now means so much more.
