Newcastle Forum All About Senior Drivers

Author: NRMA MediaDate: 08 April 2008

As part of Seniors Week celebrations a Newcastle consortium, including NRMA Director Kyle Loades, spoke at a special Years Ahead presentation for local seniors at Cardiff RSL yesterday.

The consortium - unique to Newcastle - consists of NRMA delegates and local government and community groups, is interested in issues associated with keeping seniors driving safe and will use the feedback and ideas gathered during Tuesday's presentation to develop other senior drivers programs.

Tuesday's forum, presented by peer-aged presenters including Mr Loades, addressed issues such as crash prevention, road rules, safe driving tips, vehicle and pedestrian safety and older drivers' physical fitness.

"Older drivers are generally very experienced, courteous and law abiding," Mr Loades said.

"Over time however, roads have transformed from single lane thoroughfares to multi-lane freeways while many intersections contain roundabouts nowadays. These are just some of the changes older drivers have lived through, particularly on the link roads between Newcastle City and the F3 Freeway."

The Newcastle working group is made up of NRMA Motoring & Services delegates and members of:

  • Department of Veterans Affairs
  • Australian Red Cross
  • Department of Ageing, Disability & Home Care
  • University of Newcastle, School of Medicine & Public Health (Discipline of General Practice)
  • Alzheimer's Australia NSW
  • Newcastle City Council
  • NSW Ministry of Transport

NRMA's well received Years Ahead program has been in operation since 1999. In 2007, the program reached out to more than 200 community groups comprising of over 8,000 senior drivers while 2008 marks the first year of the unique Newcastle consortium.

As part of the NRMA's commitment to road safety, the program is free and convenient as presenters come to senior's group locations throughout NSW/ACT. The informative and informal presentation features up-to-date statistics and video footage.

There are now more reasons to smile. While Roadside Assistance remains at our heart, NRMA Membership now means so much more.
