NRMA Motoring & Services is calling on the state and local government to get serious about Park and Ride facilities in Liverpool to help get more South-West Sydney commuters on public transport.
At an NRMA Board meeting in Liverpool today, NRMA President Alan Evans and Western Sydney Director Gary Punch highlighted a vacant, undeveloped block of land on Bigge Street, right next to Liverpool station.
"The NRMA believes this barren land is a waste so close to the train station," Mr Evans said.
"There are over 1,200 parking spots surrounding Liverpool station, however all are time-restricted, meaning most commuters park at Liverpool Hospital and walk to the station.
"This also forces motorists to park their cars in poorly lit areas and walk to their cars at night."
Mr Punch said the vacant block on Bigge Street was the ideal place to build a multi-storey all-day parking station to get more motorists onto public transport.
"A Park and Ride facility here would take pressure off families who are currently forced to drive to work and spend surging amounts on petrol, tolls and car maintenance," Mr Punch said.
Earlier this year, the NRMA completed a report on Park and Ride facilities in NSW and surveyed 600 motorists about their transport habits.
The statewide survey revealed almost half (43 per cent) said they would use Park and Ride facilities rather than drive to work if more facilities were available in secure areas.
Only 18 per cent currently travel to work by public transport and 37 per cent of those drive and park at the train station.
The Park and Ride study found a lack of safe parking facilities as the main reason why more people don’t drive to the station and catch the train to work.
Mr Punch said the NRMA report found that Liverpool was one of Sydney’s busiest transport corridors yet Liverpool station does not have the parking facilities available to meet the needs of the local community now, let alone with future growth.
"Liverpool station doesn’t even have 'Kiss and Ride' facilities," Mr Punch said.
"It's time for local and state governments and infrastructure providers to get serious about making Liverpool station an attractive option for commuters."

There are now more reasons to smile. While Roadside Assistance remains at our heart, NRMA Membership now means so much more.
