Exactly three months ago today, NRMA Motoring & Services President and South Coast Director Alan Evans called for $1 billion worth of spending on Princes Highway upgrades - simply to bring it up to an acceptable standard - a notion yesterday echoed by NSW Premier Nathan Rees's funding request to the Commonwealth.
A reported $1 billion spend on the Princes Highway is on the Premier's wish-list from the Australian Government's AusLink 2 funding pool. Mr Evans said the State should top up any Federal contribution with its own funds, ensuring the ongoing viability and maintenance of the South Coast's major arterial road.
"If you can make it from one end of the Princes Highway to the other without a crash, it's a huge relief," Mr Evans said.
"It's truly scary passing vehicles at notorious black spots such as Dignam's Creek and Victoria Creek.
"It is essential that work on these upgrades commences immediately - particularly at these two sites which featured prominently in the coronial inquest in to the deaths of 19 people on the Princes Highway released this year."
Mr Evans also repeated calls for an injection of funds to fix the Snowy and Kings highways in light of ongoing fatalities.
"These key links to the state's west need improvement as well," Mr Evans said.
"At a time of record surpluses and more than $15 billion in fuel excise, it's incomprehensible why the communities living and working along the Princes Highway haven't received their fare share of funding.
"The evidence is there - ongoing fatalities, a coroner's report and everyday stories of near-death experiences.
"South Coast residents deserve less talk and more action."

There are now more reasons to smile. While Roadside Assistance remains at our heart, NRMA Membership now means so much more.
