NRMA Welcomes Fast-Tracking Of Park And Ride Facilities

NRMA Motoring & Services has welcomed the State Government's announcement that 3,000 Park and Ride spaces will be delivered quicker following their decision to by-pass council approval processes.

NRMA President Alan Evans said the NRMA has been actively campaigning for more commuter car parking and is pleased the Government is listening to motorists' concerns.

"The State Government had already committed to creating 4,000 commuter car spaces under the Urban Transport Scheme," Mr Evans said.

"This means 7,000 new spots have been identified and well be delivered, providing a huge relief to Sydney commuters."

Earlier this year, the NRMA completed a study on Park and Ride facilities in NSW. Part of the study included a survey of 600 motorists about their transport habits. Almost half said they would use Park and Ride facilities rather than drive to work if more facilities were available.

Mr Evans said the NRMA's research found more than 60 per cent of motorists surveyed cited availability, affordability and the lack of safe parking facilities as the main reasons why more commuters did not drive to the station and catch the train to work.

"The State Government has addressed some of these needs," Mr Evans said.

"Existing commuter car parks in Sydney's west will be some of the first to benefit from the fast-tracked approvals. These include Seven Hills, St Marys, Werrington and Revesby.

"We look forward to working with the Government to improve commuter car parking and urge the government to plan and progress other infrastructure priorities. "The NRMA will keep a keen eye on the progress of this initiative to ensure Park and Ride facilities are delivered as promised."
