NRMA Welcomes More Commuter Car Parks

Author: NRMA Media Date: 23 August 2008

NRMA Motoring & Services has welcomed reports that the State Government will review ways to fast-track the building of commuter car parks to help solve Sydney’s chronic parking problem at train stations.

NRMA President Alan Evans said the NRMA had been actively campaigning for more commuter car parking and was pleased the Government was listening to motorists’ concerns.

"The State Government has identified commuter car parking as one of its priorities which will be a relief to Sydney commuters," Mr Evans said.

Earlier this year, the NRMA completed a study on Park and Ride facilities in NSW. Part of the study included a survey of 600 motorists about their transport habits. Almost half said they would use Park and Ride facilities rather than drive to work if more facilities were available.

Mr Evans said the NRMA’s research found more than 60 per cent of motorists surveyed cited availability, affordability and the lack of safe parking facilities as the main reasons why more commuters did not drive to the station and catch the train to work.

"Park and Rides need to be convenient, safe and affordable if you are going to entice motorists out of their cars," Mr Evans said.

"Improved Park and Ride facilities will also help tackle congestion, increase public transport use and benefit the environment.

"We look forward to working with the government to improve commuter car parking and urge the government to plan and progress other infrastructure priorities."

There are now more reasons to smile. While Roadside Assistance remains at our heart, NRMA Membership now means so much more.
