Park And Ride Win For Helensburgh

Park And Ride Win For Helensburgh

Author: NRMA MediaDate: 09 December 2008

NRMA Motoring & Services local Director Michael Tynan has welcomed the announcement of the construction of 75 new car parking spaces at Helensburgh railway station – bringing the total spaces available up to 150.

Mr Tynan said the announcement by Premier Rees was welcome news for Illawarra residents who used the station as a commuter link to travel to Sydney's CBD.

"The NRMA has been actively campaigning for more commuter car parking and is pleased the Government is listening to southern Sydney motorists' concerns," Mr Tynan said.

“Helensburgh is one of the first stations to benefit from the Government's recently announced $56 million Commuter Car Park program - a pledge to create 3,000 commuter car spaces."

Earlier this year, the NRMA completed an audit of key Park and Ride facilities in NSW. Part of the audit included a survey of 600 motorists about their transport habits. Almost half said they would use Park and Ride facilities rather than drive to work if more facilities were available.

Mr Tynan said the NRMA's research found more than 60 per cent of motorists surveyed cited availability, affordability and the lack of safe parking facilities as the main reasons why more commuters did not drive to the station and catch the train to work.

"The State Government has addressed some of these needs," Mr Tynan said.

"The NRMA survey of key Illawarra stations revealed a significant undersupply of Park and Ride facilities at Wollongong, Dapto and Albion Park stations and in dire need of upgrades.

"The NRMA will keep a keen eye on the progress of this initiative to ensure Park and Ride facilities are delivered across the region - particularly at the busiest railway stations."

There are now more reasons to smile. While Roadside Assistance remains at our heart, NRMA Membership now means so much more.
