An analysis of 97 days worth of petrol prices has found average prices in Perth are two cents per litre cheaper than Sydney.
NRMA Motoring & Services President Alan Evans, who is giving evidence to the Fuel Watch inquiry today, said Perth prices were lower than Sydney’s on 65 of the 94 days since Fuel Watch was announced by the Australian Government.
Western Australia has a Fuel Watch system in place while NSW does not. The analysis also found that Sydney prices were higher on all but six of the last 40 days.
"The NRMA believes that Fuel Watch should be introduced because it will give motorists access to information the oil companies don’t want us to have," Mr Evans said.
"NRMA's analysis shows that prices in Perth post the Fuel Watch announcement have been two cents per litre cheaper than Sydney, which is promising for NSW motorists.
"But more importantly, Fuel Watch will put an end to prices fluctuating wildly as we currently see in Sydney and inform motorists about where they can get the cheapest fuel.
"It means that motorists will be armed with the same information as the oil companies. The oil giants hate the thought, which is why the NRMA has endorsed Fuel Watch."
The NRMA is also calling on the Australian Government to conduct a thorough review of fuel Watch after 12 months and announce clear terms of reference for the review now.
Mr Evans said Fuel Watch should help stabilise petrol prices in the short-term, but that the Australian Government needed to embark on a strategy to wean the nation off foreign oil to deliver real long term benefits.
"Fuel Watch is one way to help motorists cope with rising petrol prices, but we must also start wrestling our transport energy future away from oil companies and put it back in the hands of the Australian people," Mr Evans said.
"The Unites States, European Union and Japan are now charging down a path to a greener transport future without oil - we must do the same.
"Fuel Watch is a welcomed initiative for the short-term, however if we are serious about helping Australian families then the Government needs to wind-back the $10 billion in tax incentives given to fossil fuel industries.
"We need to introduce fuel consumption standards into Australia to stop manufacturers building and importing gas guzzling vehicles.
"And Australia needs to get serious about investing in alternative fuels and technology that will end our dependence on foreign oil and help deliver a greener, more efficient and cheaper transport energy future."

There are now more reasons to smile. While Roadside Assistance remains at our heart, NRMA Membership now means so much more.
