Petrol Cop A First Step

Petrol Cop A First Step

Author: NRMA MediaDate: 16 February 2008

The appointment of Australia's Petrol Commissioner is a good first step towards achieving fairer petrol prices in Australia.

NRMA Motoring & Services President Alan Evans said Mr Pat Walker had the full support of the NRMA and its Members in his task of delivering fairer petrol prices for all Australians.

"After three years of hard work by the NRMA, Australia now has a full-time Petrol Commissioner and that's a good first step to getting fairer prices in Australia," Mr Evans said.

"The new Commissioner has a tough job on his hands and motorists are expecting him to make the most of his powers to deliver transparency and fairness in the market.

"Monitoring fuel prices is one thing - the real task for the new Commissioner will be to act when oil companies are caught ripping Australians off, as they were over the Christmas holiday period.

"Mr Walker must not hesitate in asking for additional powers in order to achieve this task and on this issue he has the full backing of the NRMA."

The NRMA wants the Petrol commissioner to have the powers to:

  • Order oil companies to adjust their prices if they are too high and issue fines if oil companies do not comply
  • Force oil companies to drop prices to compensate motorists if overcharging occurs
  • Summon oil executives at any time to explain price discrepancies
  • Monitor daily prices against the benchmark Singapore Mogas and Malaysian crude
  • Provide weekly reports to the public on the price of petrol

Mr Evans said the last thing Australia needed was for there to be no change to the status quo.

There are now more reasons to smile. While Roadside Assistance remains at our heart, NRMA Membership now means so much more.
