Road safety for kids in the classroom

NRMA RoadZone moved into Newcastle this week to tackle life-saving, road safety issues at St Phillips Public School.

NRMA Motoring & Services in partnership with Questacon explores road safety issues in the classroom for all road users including pedestrians, cyclists, passengers and drivers.

NRMA Director Kyle Loades, said the NRMA RoadZone in-school show would teach kids aged 9-12 important road safety lessons and save lives.

"Teaching road safety to children at a young is age is crucial as they are the drivers of tomorrow and the next generation to tackle busy Newcastle roads," Mr Loades said.

"Students think about their own behaviour on the road, develop an increased awareness on the road and make better decisions.

"Kids even go home and tell their parents what to do."

NRMA RoadZone, a travelling road safety exhibition, has been visiting local communities in regional NSW for over ten years to raise road safety awareness.

Mr Loades said NRMA RoadZone had taken its fun and interactive lessons into schools to further step up road safety awareness among school-aged children.

"The multimedia road safety show helps teachers deliver their own road safety curriculum in a fun and engaging way," Mr Loades said.

"Last year more than 200 schools from Sydney and regional NSW were visited by the NRMA RoadZone in-school program.

"That's more than 36,000 students who have been made more aware of critical road safety issues."

NRMA RoadZone Senior Manager, Education Programs, Venera Owens said the highenergy, multimedia show was designed to show the science of collisions.

"One graphic demonstration shows the protection helmets give versus the impact taken by an unprotected head," Ms Owens said.
