Road Safety We Can Implement Now

Road Safety We Can Implement Now

Author: NRMA MediaDate: 03 March 2008

Some of our most practical road safety solutions don’t involve building multi-billion motorways but practical, simple solutions, NRMA Group CEO Tony Stuart will tell the Australian Road Safety Summit today.

The NRMA has campaigned hard to secure the completion of major roads in NSW that are safer and provide a smoother ride for motorists.

In his speech at the annual summit in Darling Harbour at 3:30pm today, Mr Stuart will also outline a series of smaller, less expensive measures that could be implemented now to help improve road safety and reduce the road toll.

Some measures to be outlined by Mr Stuart include:

  • Lightweight road signs that tumble when hit by motorists (40% of road deaths are caused when motorists crash in to road side objects like poles)
  • Build lanes to a minimum width of 3.2 metres to accommodate vehicles of all sizes (Epping Rd lanes have been shrunk to 2.8 metres to accommodate a cycle lane)
  • High visibility road studs and thermoplastic line markings near pedestrian crossing and traffic intersections to keep pedestrians safe
  • Flashing lights at all school zones across Australia
  • Front, side and rear under-runs fitted to all heavy vehicles to reduce the impact caused by crashes with cars
  • Electronic stability control on all heavy vehicles
  • Tamper-proof onboard electronic control (black boxes) introduced on all heavy vehicles

"When it comes to building roads, designing and funding them, and the management of traffic on our network, it is easy for us to be consumed by the data, the figures and the statistics," Mr Stuart said.

"But what is more important is to have a practical, real-life understanding of what is actually happening on our roads."

Mr Stuart said Australia was in danger of falling behind and more progress on initiatives that would allow Australia to design and build better and safer roads.

"NRMA is not just a motorists’ advocate - we are prepared to help," Mr Stuart said.

"We are prepared to help to pilot ideas, to promote them and to invest in them if they are going to save lives on our roads."

There are now more reasons to smile. While Roadside Assistance remains at our heart, NRMA Membership now means so much more.
