NRMA Motoring & Services President and ACT Director Alan Evans today urged voters to choose carefully when voting at this weekend’s ACT Legislative Assembly election.
Mr Evans said ACT road improvements were too few and too far between and voters should consider each party’s road policies before filling in their ballot paper.
"It is encouraging to see the progress made in the Gungahlin Drive Extension project, however these improvements clearly should have been completed some time ago when there was an even more urgent need for a solution to road congestion on major thoroughfares in the ACT," Mr Evans said.
"The motor car is the prime method of transport in the ACT, so it makes sense that quality road infrastructure should be made a priority for residents.
"The NRMA certainly expects elected representatives to work with their NSW and Federal counterparts in fast-tracking an urgent upgrade of the Kings Highway.
"The NRMA produced the evidence in its 2005 Better Roads ACT project finding casualty crash rates on the Kings Highway were 85% higher than the NSW average and road fatalities were 8% higher.
"It would be no surprise to learn that these figures were now in fact worse. “If you get to one end of the Kings to the other without being in or seeing a crash, it’s a big relief.
"The NRMA certainly welcomes the announcement of an additional $10 million funding on top of the $23 million promised by the Federal government and $3 million promised by the current ACT government.
"The NRMA has lobbied tirelessly for Kings Highway funding and it’s pleasing to see money finally promised for one of the country’s worst highways.
"There have been 12 deaths on ACT roads this year - a statistic well worth considering when voting.
"The NRMA will continue to work with governments and councils on behalf of motorists, regardless of who is elected next weekend".

There are now more reasons to smile. While Roadside Assistance remains at our heart, NRMA Membership now means so much more.
