Victoria Rd & Iron Cove Bridge

Victoria Rd & Iron Cove Bridge

Author: NRMA MediaDate: 21 February 2008

Changes to Victoria Rd and the Iron Cove Bridge will make traveling by bus easier for commuters without gridlocking motorists.

The RTA proposals include a duplication of the Iron Cove bridge and peak hour bus lanes along Victoria Rd by making minor adjustments to the road.

Pedestrians and cyclists using the popular 'bay run' are also in line to benefit from a much wider and safer path across the Iron Cove Bridge.
NRMA Motoring & Services President, Alan Evans, said the changes would improve travel times for buses without taking critical lanes away from motorists.

"By duplicating the Iron Cove Bridge we can have a permanent bus lane with capacity for the future without making life unbearable for motorists - that's a win-win situation," Mr Evans said.

"It is this sort of integrated transport solution that Sydney needs to encourage more people to use public transport, while still recognising the need to cater for motorists".

The NRMA will now begin consulting with Members traveling along Victoria Rd to gauge their opinions on the RTA's proposed changes.

"The key to getting more people to use public transport is in providing the public with a frequent service and reliable travel times," Mr Evans said.

"Using tidal flow technology and making minor changes to existing median strips will make it possible to create bus lanes along key sections of Victoria Rd during peak hour, without losing existing lanes currently being used by both cars and buses.

"That gives buses a smoother run into the city and gets them out of lanes currently shared with cars. This will ensure a smoother run for everyone.

"That's why the NRMA will begin a process of talking to its Members to get a better understanding of what the issues are for those traveling along Victoria Road."

There are now more reasons to smile. While Roadside Assistance remains at our heart, NRMA Membership now means so much more.
