NRMA Motoring & Services President Wendy Machin said the Australian Government has given some good news to NSW residents today and should be congratulated for committing to road infrastructure and safety which will ultimately save lives.
"The NRMA warmly welcomes this additional funding, particularly the fact that a substantial proportion of the money will be immediately available to be spent this financial year," Ms Machin said.
"Black Spot funding has been a major factor in improving road safety on many roads around Australia - additional funding for these projects is fantastic.
"The Prime Minister has placed a real emphasis on safety by also announcing funding for the installation of boom gates at level crossings and additional maintenance funding for national network highways.
"Motorists using the Pacific, Hume, Newell, Mitchell, Great Western and New England highways will benefit from a safer travelling environment.
"The NRMA's highway audits - including last November's Newell Highway study - clearly demonstrate that highways need urgent funding to fix black spots and upgrade amenities at rest stops."
Ms Machin said the NSW Government must sign up to the new Nation Building funding agreements before the 1 March deadline to ensure NSW taxpayers benefit from extra funding.
"Once again the Australian Government is putting money back in to NSW infrastructure projects - bailing out the State Government which has cut back on several projects including the vital upgrade of the Pacific Highway," Ms Machin said.
"In the past, NSW was not able to take full advantage of Australian Government road funding opportunities because of inadequate planning and prioritising of future projects.
"The NRMA would welcome round-table discussions with the NSW Government to assist in the planning and prioritising process.
"We look forward to the Australian Government's pending announcement of its Infrastructure Australia funding priorities.
"NSW is badly lagging behind other States in terms of new road projects - the Pacific Highway, the M4 extension and upgrading of the M5 cannot wait.
"Kevin Rudd and Anthony Albanese are saving people's lives and should be congratulated for this package."

There are now more reasons to smile. While Roadside Assistance remains at our heart, NRMA Membership now means so much more.
