All Petrol Retailers Should Post Prices

Author: Date: 16 May 2009

All major petrol retailers should advertise petrol prices on their websites in real-time following the decision by Shell to remove their online prices.

NRMA Motoring & Services President Wendy Machin said Shell's decision to remove their prices would make the petrol industry in Australia less transparent.

"Shell's decision to remove retail prices from their website is disappointing for motorists who relied on the prices to shop around," Ms Machin said.

"This was also a useful resource on public holidays when retail prices were unavailable online to motorists on websites like Motormouth.

"All major retailers - Coles, Woolworths, BP and Mobil - should advertise their prices online."

The major retailers could still change prices but need to make those prices available online.

Ms Machin said this service would not be difficult for retailers to implement, particularly Coles and Woolworths, which currently have grocery prices available on their website in real-time.

"If the major retailers can provide online shoppers with the local price of a litre of cask wine then surely they can inform them of the price of a litre of petrol.

"If they can be transparent in the aisles they can extend it to the bowser as well."
