NRMA Motoring & Services President and local Director Wendy Machin today welcomed the announcement of additional funding for a section of the Pacific Highway, north of Coffs Harbour.
"The announcement is good news for people who drive the Pacific Highway and the NRMA is pleased that both State and Federal governments have committed to the Pacific Highway," Ms Machin said.
The duplication of a seven kilometre section of the Pacific Highway at Glenugie, 60 kilometres north of Coffs Harbour is expected to be open by the end of 2011.
Ms Machin said every piece of duplication and upgrade was a win for NSW motorists but close to two-thirds of the highway still needed to be duplicated.
"It has been over 20 years since a coroner's report recommended the Pacific Highway be duplicated," Ms Machin said.
"While it is not feasible for this to happen overnight, the NRMA does expect governments to be prepared to spend money now.
"This means that planning should be in place for projects to commence immediately when funds are available.
"North Coast residents have waited 20 years for the Pacific Highway to get upgraded.
"Governments need to invest in major projects that will provide a much-needed boost to Australia's largest economy and provide first-class infrastructure for future generations

There are now more reasons to smile. While Roadside Assistance remains at our heart, NRMA Membership now means so much more.
