Bondi Local Wins NRMA Helping People Award

Author: NRMA MotoringDate: 12 November 2009

The volunteer efforts of Bondi resident Mrs Chana Kavka have shone out from almost 450 nominations to win the highly coveted Community Volunteer Award for this year's NRMA Helping People Awards.

NRMA's Helping People Awards annually recognise the efforts of hardworking volunteers from NSW and the ACT who volunteer for a charity or not-for-profit organisation.

NRMA Motoring & Services Director and ex-Olympian Dawn Fraser said Mrs Kavka won the Community Award for her hours of devoted volunteer work for the Sydney Friendship Circle, a charity she set up to enrich the lives of special needs children.

"Using a network of more than 75 teenage volunteers to befriend local children living with varied levels of disability, Mrs Kavka has organised more than 2,000 hours of home visits and recreational programs in two years," Ms Fraser said.

"Mrs Kavka is a truly inspiring individual whose charity work makes a difference to the community and to the families of children with special needs whose lives she touches.

"Despite holding down a full time teaching role and raising two children of her own, Mrs Kavka spends at least 30 hours a week, including after hours and weekends, to make the 'friendship' program work.

"Mrs Kavka represents the special kind of person that the NRMA is proud to recognise and reward through its annual Helping People Awards."

As winner of the 2009 NRMA Helping People Community Volunteer Award, Mrs Kavka will receive an East Coast adventure with a $500 fuel voucher and a $1,000 accommodation voucher to use at any one of NRMA's five Holiday Parks. NRMA's five Holiday Parks are located in the Gold Coast, Darlington Beach north of Coffs Harbour, Merimbula Beach three hours from Canberra, Umina Beach on the Central Coast and 35 minutes from the city in Sydney's West.

Mrs Kavka's $5000 donation will go towards the ongoing work of the Sydney Friendship Circle.

Mrs Kavka and the other three deserving winners of the Environmental, Young and Senior Volunteer Awards attended a special presentation ceremony at the NRMA's Head Office in Sydney today to receive their awards.
