If Caltex is given approval to acquire over 300 Mobil service stations it will mean they either own or supply fuel to at least 44 per cent of the market in Australia.
NRMA Motoring & Services President Wendy Machin said the ACCC needed to think carefully before approving the acquisition, which would result in Caltex owning 22 per cent of the retail market as well as supplying fuel to Woolworths and some independents.
"The most important issue the ACCC must face is will this acquisition improve competition in the market," Ms Machin said.
"It is hard enough to ensure fairer prices when Coles Express and Woolworths dominate the competition with their 22 per cent share of the retail market.
"Australians want to see more competition in the petrol industry - not less."
