Child Restraints Guide Launched

Child Restraints Guide Launched

Author: NRMA Motoring & ServicesDate: 10 June 2009

The RTA and NRMA Motoring & Services today launched the 2009 Safer Child Restraints Guide to provide parents with the most up-to-date advice on choosing the best car restraints for their children.

NSW Centre for Road Safety General Manager Maureen Elliott said the research was carried out as part of the Child Restraint Evaluation Program which tested and rated 34 child restraints for different ages.

"Children need the greatest protection when travelling in vehicles - they are our most important passengers and need to be safely restrained," Ms Elliot said.

"We need to ensure children use restraints which are the right size and which are correctly installed so they are protected from harm.

"This new guide makes it simple for parents to choose the correct restraint based on the size and weight of their child."

NRMA vehicle safety expert Jack Haley said the NRMA is committed to researching all aspects of our Members' motoring needs by providing them with unbiased information on vehicle, roads and occupant safety.

"While all the restraints tested met Australian Standards, the study found some restraints performed better than others in crash tests," Mr Haley said.

"The top three performers were the Babylove Snap'n Go, Hipod Senator and the Infa Vario Kid."

Ms Elliot said research showed that when used correctly, child restraints can significantly reduce a child's risk of serious injury as a passenger in a crash.

"For this reason, we encourage all parents and carers to have their restraint installed by an expert fitter at one of 190 RTA-authorised restraint fitting stations across NSW," she said.

The program was conducted by the RTA, NRMA and the Royal Automobile Club Victoria (RACV).

The guide is available from RTA motor registries and NRMA branches while advice and further information can be sourced from: RTA Customer Service Enquiry on 132213 or www.rta.nsw.gov.au NRMA Technical Advice on 1300 655 443 or www.mynrma.com.au
