Eastern Creek Comes Alive Today As 2000 Kids Race In Billycart Showdown Today

Author: NRMA Motoring & ServicesDate: 25 August 2009

Forget Formula One, the hottest racing action happens at Eastern Creek Raceway today with 2000 students to race self-designed and self-built billycarts as part of a joint initiative between NRMA and the Department of Education and Training.

NRMA Director and rally car champion Coral Taylor said students from 45 NSW primary and secondary schools would race 82 billycarts in a series of obstacle, sprint and endurance tests to teach young children about road safety, vehicle technology and the environment.

"This is the fourth NRMA Kids Design Challenge TechnoPush to be held and the atmosphere at Eastern Creek raceway will be electric with schools screaming support for their teams, Ms Taylor said.

Despite the popularity of computer and digital gaming, billycart racing still holds great appeal - teamwork, vehicle safety and good honest outdoor fun is the aim of the day.

"Kids love the whole process of working together to design and build their own billycarts and then getting out on the track to race against other schools.

"Competition is fierce with months of hard work and creativity from 45 schools and communities culminating in the safest, speediest and most innovative pushcarts.

"The day has immense educational value which brings the classroom into the real world and ensures basic road safety concepts are learned from an early age."

A range of awards will be presented at the end of the day for the following categories: Road Safety, Overall Performance, Environmental Champions, Team Identity, Investigating Scientifically and Design Excellence.
