Easy Ways To Save Money On Holiday You Can Still Travel In These Uncertain Times

Author: NRMA MotoringDate: 05 March 2009

Uncertain economic times should not sound the death knell for holiday travel. Research, creativity and flexibility may be the difference between taking an affordable holiday and staying at home.

Way2go travel magazine has compiled a practical list of 30 ways to save money on holiday travel. Read all 30 ideas in issue two of Way2go travel magazine.

"Many of the suggestions may save travellers not just a little but a lot of money," editor Sandy McPhie said.

Keep these holiday dollar-saving options in mind:

  • House swapping; it works in Australia and overseas, try http://www.homelink.com.au/
  • Stay at youth hostels; they can accommodate everyone including families.
  • "Couch surf", (where you sleep on someone's lounge or in a spare room). This is great if you want to live like a local, http://www.couchsurfing.com/ can help find obliging locals.
  • Avoid expensive airport taxis, for advice getting to and from airports around the world try http://www.toandfromtheairport.com/
  • Check the price of petrol at your destination, in some countries diesel is cheaper than petrol, so hire a car accordingly.
  • Buy or hire a GPS navigator if you are planning on driving in unknown areas or countries. Getting lost can add hundreds of kilometres to a driving trip, but beware the GPS doesn't take you on to expensive toll ways. This one may or may not save you dollars but it may save your relationship!
  • Eat like the locals, give hotel restaurants and their expensive bills a miss.
  • Use an ATM, they are widespread and can be cheaper than cashing travellers cheques. Just check if you will be charged fees and loadings. Debit cards or pre paid credit cards can cut costs too.
  • Shop around to save on travel insurance, check whether your credit card offers insurance if you use it to book your holiday.

Ms McPhie said Way2go was an engaging travel magazine, revolving around people sharing their personal travel stories, advice, photos and memories. Many of the stories are inspirational and emotional.

"The journeys have proven life changing for many of the contributors," Ms McPhie said.

"We are encouraging travellers to submit travel advice, tips, stories and photos. The magazine is offering prize incentives including holidays, travel goods and cash for reader contributions."
