Tired of waiting for action, NRMA Motoring & Services has joined forces with local community and business leaders to form a taskforce with the goal of getting the F6 Freeway completed.
The taskforce will include elected representatives from southern Sydney and the South Coast and business leaders and will meet in the coming weeks to map out a plan to get the F6 completed.
The first task for the new group will be to secure $2 million in funding from the Australian and NSW governments to commence a planning study to determine the best route and design of the remainder of the freeway.
The taskforce will also work to harness community support for the project and is calling on residents to voice their opinion on the F6 Freeway by uploading videos or posting blogs on NRMA's new motorists' website www.roadtube.com.au.
The taskforce will use the residents' testimonials to support its efforts to secure a commitment from governments to get the F6 completed.
NRMA Deputy-President and Sutherland Shire resident Michael Tynan said the local community was sick of waiting for the F6 to be finished.
"The land corridor for the completion of the F6 was reserved decades ago and if we do not take action it could be decades before we see any real commitment from Government," Mr Tynan said.
"That's why the NRMA has launched this taskforce - the political, business, community and industry leaders of our local community have decided to take a stand and work together to get this road completed."
The taskforce will lobby for the remainder of the F6 Freeway to be built from the Princes Highway at Loftus to connect with Sydney's motorway network near Sydney Airport. It will provide greater access to Port Botany and Port Kembla. It could also provide an effective public transport route.
"Completing the remainder of the F6 will reduce traffic times, vehicle operating costs, carbon emissions and provide a much-needed boost to the local economy through job growth and business development," Mr Tynan said.
"It will also take the growing number of trucks accessing the ports off our suburban streets, making our local roads safer and less congested."
The taskforce is expected to hold its first meeting in the coming weeks.
