Making Travel Plans Take Care Booking Online

Author: NRMA Motoring & ServicesDate: 03 September 2009

Web site security should be top of mind when planning to purchase travel related products and services from an online supplier.
Way2go editor Sandy McPhie said the web offers access to a plethora of information for those sourcing, comparing and customising travel plans.

"When booking online it's easy to miss important details that could have a significant effect on travel plans", Ms McPhie said.

"Consulting an accredited travel agent before finalising holiday plans can provide invaluable information saving travellers time, angst and money. Family and friends, newspapers and books are also credible sources. The more information you have the better informed your choices and decisions will be".

For travellers who do book online Way2go has some practical tips:

  • Make sure there are two signs that the Web site is secure. Firstly, check that the payment page has a padlock icon on top of the browser on the right-hand side.
  • Ensure the http part of the web address has an 's'. So it reads https, the 's' stands for secure.
  • If you are using an online travel agent ensure they are a member of the Travel Compensation Fund (TCF) a group that reimburses travellers if the travel company goes bust.
  • Check your online price includes all taxes, such as GST and airport related taxes. Australian Web sites have to provide the total cost, not all international Web sites do.
  • Many cities have more than one airport. Check and choose the most convenient.
  • Some destinations share the same name. Be sure to book the correct destination.
  • Read the fine print and check all terms and conditions. Some cheaper deals have many restrictions on luggage, check- in times and changes to travel itineraries.
  • Cross-check a company if they are offering an unbelievable deal, to ensure you are not a scam victim.
  • Always double check all details. Information can often revert back to their default if you don't save or make changes in the allotted time frame.

Ms McPhie said we are currently compiling a Best Beaches Guide for the next issue of Way2go and are calling for nominations for Favourite Australian Beach. Published nominations with photos will earn $100. Go to Way2go for more information and to nominate your piece of paradise".

"Way2go is a unique read as stories are written by travellers wanting to share their experiences. We are always on the look-out for practical travel tips, engaging travel stories, special photos and travel memories, successful contributors are rewarded with cash and great travel prizes," Ms McPhie said.

Way2go travel magazine is on sale nationally at all newsagents and Coles supermarkets.
