Wednesday 23 September 2009: In a positive development for motorists and truck drivers, the NSW Roads and Traffic Authority has confirmed it has not finalised its decision to reduce the Newell Highway speed limit from 110km/h to 100km/h.
Speaking to ABC radio today, the RTA's Dr Soames Job said:
"No that decision has not been finalised. That was a recommendation from the review team."
NRMA Motoring & Services President Wendy Machin is calling for Newell Highway communities, the trucking industry, local councils, motorists and the police to be consulted before a decision is made on the 10km/h proposed reduction.
The plans outlined in the RTA's 2009 Newell Highway Safety Review stated:
"The speed limit will be reduced to a consistent 100 km/h from the Victorian border to the Queensland border."
Yesterday in Dubbo, Ms Machin highlighted the NRMA's concerns with the proposed 10km/h reduction, pointing to concerns with fatigue and safety.
When asked by local media about the NSW Police's position on the 10km/h reduction, Assistant Commissioner John Hartley said it was the first he had heard about it and shared some of the NRMA's concerns.
Ms Machin said the public needed to be better informed regarding significant proposed changes to the speed limit on the Newell Highway.
"The NRMA wants to hear from anyone concerned with the proposed drop to 100km/h on the Newell Highway," Ms Machin said.
"We want people to blog or upload a video on our Roadtube website or write to the NRMA," Ms Machin said.
"The NRMA will collate the feedback and pass it on to the RTA and Newell Highway Taskforce."

There are now more reasons to smile. While Roadside Assistance remains at our heart, NRMA Membership now means so much more.
