NRMA Consumer Warning To Parents: Use Approved Child Restraints

Author: NRMA Motoring & ServicesDate: 27 August 2009

NRMA Motoring & Services today advised consumers buying child restraints to first consult the results of an extensive test program after the second ACCC recall of a child restraint in 13 months.

The test program is available here.

NRMA Director Coral Taylor said child safety in vehicles should never be compromised.

"Consumers should not purchase a child restraint from any source unless it carries a sticker or label stating it meets the Australian Standard," Ms Taylor Said.

"The NRMA recommends consumers to check the star rating on the NRMA website or in a brochure available from NRMA branches and country service centres."

The NRMA participates in the Child Restraint Evaluation Program which aims to test every restraint on the Australian market that complies with the Australian Standard and is legal to sell.

Ms Taylor said the program tests the restraints to more extensive levels than the Australian Standard and provides star ratings so consumers can make an informed decision.

"The restraints are rated on how well they protect a child in a crash and how easy they are to use while injury protection and ease-of-use ratings are each scored by stars," Ms Taylor said.
