NRMA Grant Helps Keep 300 Guyra Central School Kids Safe

Author: NRMA Motoring & ServicesDate: 08 April 2009

The Guyra Central School P&C Association will use a $5,000 NRMA Safer Driving School Community Safety Grant to install flashing school zone signs and warn drivers to slow down.

NRMA Director Graham Blight will meet with Guyra Central School Acting Principal Sam Hutton and P&C Association Project Coordinator Gina Lockyer today at 4:00pm to present the grant and discuss the visibility of existing school zone and crossing ahead signs.

Mr Blight said the flashing school zone signs should reduce accidents and take away any
confusion drivers might have when approaching the school zone.

"Earlier this year the NRMA called on the NSW Government to fast track its school zone flashing lights program as only five per cent of NSW's 3,100 schools have flashing lights," Mr Blight said.

"Flashing School Zone signs will be a win for not only Guyra Central School but for the entire community.

"Ms Lockyer has been a dedicated advocate for flashing school zone signs and it is time her persistence is rewarded."

Guyra P&C Association Member and concerned parent Gina Lockyer said flashing school zone signs were a high priority as the existing school zone sign was barely visible to drivers.

"The current school crossing is at the main entrance of the school and flashing lights would be a much safer reminder to people to slow down as it is a busy street with lots of traffic," Ms Lockyer said.

"As a driver you simply do not have enough warning of the dangers that face you and it is only a matter of time before a tragedy occurs.

"Our local NSW Police Department have already expressed their concerns about the safety of students and their families in the current school zones of Guyra Central School."

NRMA Safer Driving School Community Grants help communities develop solutions to local road safety problems. This year NRMA has awarded $100,000 worth of road safety grants to 24 community groups and councils throughout NSW and the ACT.

Photo opportunity: NRMA Director Graham Blight will present the community grant Wednesday 8 April at 4:00pm to Guyra Central School, Marne Street, Guyra. Children will be present. (Meet at the administration office).
