Five Central Coast public schools have used a $4,000 NRMA Safer Driving School Community Road Safety Grant to keep kids safe on local roads.

Centrl Mangrove, Peats Ridge, Somersby, Kulnura and Spencer Public School students were treated to a day of activities last month as part of a pilot road safety day designed to increase awareness of other road users and to encourage safer behaviour on the roads.

NRMA Director Kyle Loades met with the teachers from Central Mangrove Public School last week to discuss the road safety day which involved teaching a series of critical road safety messages in a simulated traffic environment.

Mr Loades said nearly 300 children from Kindergarten through to Year Five experienced real traffic conditions with Year Six students helping them through a range of activities like walking to school, looking both ways for oncoming cars and crossing the road safely.

"The road safety day incorporated lessons from a new, locally-designed Road Awareness and Pedestrian Safety Program (RAPS), which aims to teach children the importance of behaving safely on the road," Mr Loades said.

The road safety day included talks by local police and activities including: A road safety poster project. Coping with traffic. A bike helmet challenge to protect an egg to demonstrate the vulnerability of an unprotected head.

Central Mangrove Public School Teacher Melissa Mackay organised the road safety day activities for all schools involved and said the program had the support of the entire community.
"The day was a huge success - students are still talking about many of the safety messages presented on the day," Ms Mackay said.

"We are hoping to continue the road safety day program next year."

NRMA Community Grants help communities develop solutions to local road safety problems. This year NRMA has awarded $100,000 worth of road safety grants to 24 community groups and councils throughout NSW.

There are now more reasons to smile. While Roadside Assistance remains at our heart, NRMA Membership now means so much more.
