Rotary Club of Goulburn will use a $2,800 NRMA Safer Driving School Community Safety Grant for an intensive younger driver education program held on Sunday to keep younger drivers safe on local roads.
NRMA Director Alan Evans met with Goulburn Rotary Director Ian Radford and Year 11 Goulburn and Crookwell High School students at the Log Book Run road safety day to present the grant and discuss the U Turn the Wheel Program.
Mr Evans said the Log Book Run road safety day was part of the U Turn the Wheel program which teaches practical road safety and driver awareness to all Year 11 high school students in the Goulburn and Crookwell region.
"U Turn the Wheel has been running for nine years and is part of the school curriculum so it reaches hundreds of local Learner-Driver' students with life-saving, road safety messages," Mr Evans said.
"Practical driving experience reduces the number of accidents on local roads and the Rotary Club of Goulburn is to be thanked for bringing the community together for this important road safety initiative."
During the Log Book Run registered Learner Drivers and their parent supervisors follow a set route that allows them to experience a wide range of driving conditions and tasks including:
Goulburn Rotary Director Ian Radford said the U Turn the Wheel’s Log Book Driver Safety Runs had the support of the entire community and thanked the NRMA for their continued support.
"Police, local businesses, Goulburn Mulwaree Council and emergency services all band together to donate their time and resources to make the day a success," Mr Radford said.
"It's a fun learning experience finished off with a free BBQ lunch and a display of defensive driving and demonstrations of skidding and braking by police driving instructors."
NRMA Safer Driving School Community Grants help communities develop solutions to local road safety problems. This year NRMA has awarded $100,000 worth of road safety grants to 24 community groups and councils throughout NSW.
