NRMA Grant Helps Keep Illawarra Kids Safe

Author: NRMA Motoring & ServicesDate: 04 March 2009

Small schools and community groups within the Shellharbour Region will be given the opportunity to learn about road safety from Lake Illawarra PCYC, thanks to a NRMA Safer Driving School Community Safety Grant of $5000.

NRMA Deputy President Michael Tynan will meet with Lake Illawarra PCYC this Friday 6 March at 1:00pm to present the grant and discuss the Illawarra Road Safety Park program.

Mr Tynan said the Illawarra Road Safety Park was the only bike and road safety facility in the Illawarra Region and the NRMA was proud to be able to help keep the Park teaching safe bicycle and on-road behaviour.

"The Park has been struggling to provide educational programs to smaller schools and disability groups due to growing expenses and the rectification of constant vandalism," Mr Tynan said.

"The NRMA understands the importance of the Park as increasing awareness of road safety issues in kids will ultimately prevent accidents and save lives."

A Road Safety Education Officer runs the simulated road safety facility for schools and community groups which teaches:

  • Helmet wearing and safe riding procedures.
  • Braking.
  • Road rules and road signage.
  • Bicycle maintenance and safety.
  • Head injuries and the consequences of careless bicycle riding.

Lake Illawarra PCYC Manager Mark Rigby said Lake Illawarra PCYC was committed to teaching bicycle safety to more than 5,000 students every year.

"The $5,000 from the NRMA will be used to subsidise the education officer's wages to allow smaller schools and community groups to still take part in the program without the PCYC losing money and going backwards," Mr Rigby said.

"It is great that the smaller schools and groups can still take part in the program and this really demonstrates the NRMA's commitment to community road safety."

NRMA Safer Driving School Community Grants help communities develop solutions to local road safety problems. This year NRMA has awarded $100,000 worth of road safety grants to 24 community groups and councils throughout NSW.
