Mid-Western Regional Council will use a $5,000 NRMA Safer Driving School Community Safety Grant for a community road show to address road safety issues and reduce accidents on local roads.
NRMA Director Graham Blight met with the Mid-Western Regional Council Mayor Cr Percy Thompson, Council representatives and members of the local community earlier this week to present the grant and discuss the Road Safety Road Show project.
Mr Blight said the one-day Road Show would be held in Mudgee in May and would bring together community groups, local businesses and road safety professionals to increase awareness of local road safety issues.
"The Road Show will teach the community about the dangers of speeding, drink driving, driver fatigue and the importance of seatbelt wearing," Mr Blight said.
"These are the four main killers on NSW roads and the NRMA was proud to support such an important road safety initiative."
"Road safety workshops will also be held throughout the day focussing on safety issues surrounding pedestrians, older drivers, bike riders and correct fitting of child restraints."
Mid-Western Regional Council Mayor Cr Percy Thompson said that the Road Show had the support of the entire community.
"Police, Ambulance, Health, Fire and State Emergency Service representatives will all give up their time to highlight the dangers on the road and keep our community safe," Mr Thompson said.
"Last year the Mid-Western Local Area had a number of accidents related to speed, alcohol and driver fatigue and it is Council's absolute priority to increase safety on local roads."
NRMA Safer Driving School Community Grants help communities develop solutions to local road safety problems. This year NRMA has awarded $100,000 worth of road safety grants to 24 community groups and councils throughout NSW.
