Lithgow Council will use a $2,500 NRMA Safer Driving School Community Safety Grant to educate local senior residents on safety issues they face while driving, walking or using a motorised wheelchair or scooter.
NRMA Director Graham Blight met with the Lithgow Council and senior members of the local community last week to present the grant and discuss the Senior Drivers Workshop.
Mr Blight said the one-day Senior Drivers Workshop would be held at the Lithgow Police and Community Youth Club on Saturday 21st March and would increase awareness of local road safety issues.
"Without a driver's licence, many seniors would find daily tasks like shopping, getting to medical appointments or visiting family and friends very difficult and the NRMA is proud to support such an important community safety initiative," Mr Blight said.
"The Senior Drivers Workshop will teach local seniors ways of recognising and adapting to the driving challenges presented by the changes of aging.
"Eyesight decline, loss of hearing, limited mobility and increased reaction times are all important to consider when getting out on the road."
The workshop will cover road safety topics for older drivers including:
Lithgow Council Mayor Cr Neville Castle said the Senior Drivers Workshop had the support of the entire community.
"Presentations and displays will be given on the day from Lithgow Highway Patrol, Club Revive, Council's 'Live Life Well' Project Officer and Lithgow Mobility Aids," Mr Castle said.
"There has been considerable interest in the community already about the Senior Drivers Workshop and places are filling up fast."
NRMA Safer Driving School Community Grants help communities develop solutions to local road safety problems. This year NRMA has awarded $100,000 worth of road safety grants to 24 community groups and councils throughout NSW.
