NRMA Patrols In Wollongong Support Variety Bash For Charity

Author: NRMA Motoring & ServicesDate: 06 August 2009

Three Wollongong NRMA Motoring & Services' Patrols will head off to Broken Hill from the Sydney Opera House this Sunday as part of a support group for the 11-day, 2009 Variety NSW Bash for charity.

The annual Variety Bash is a national charity motoring event that raises more than $2 million each year for ill, special needs and disadvantaged children. The first Bash was organised by well-known businessman Dick Smith 25 years ago and has been gaining support ever since. Bash participants will travel more than 4800km from Sydney to Broken Hill via Alice Springs.

NRMA Deputy President Michael Tynan said the Wollongong-based NRMA Patrols, Brian Caunt, Glenn Stocker and Wayne Whittaker were to be commended for supporting the Variety Bash and donating their own time, services and vehicles to provide mobile workshops throughout the Variety Bash journey.

"It is great peace of mind for the Bash participants to know that assistance is at hand if they break down or have mechanical troubles along the way," Mr Tynan said.

NRMA Patrol Brian Caunt, a veteran of 24 Variety Bashes, said the roads from Sydney to Broken Hill could be challenging for participants, with everything from towing vehicles out of bogs to roadside welding all part of a day's work.

"Wayne, Glenn and I are prepared to give it our all and are happy to use our mechanical skills to assist in any way we can," Mr Caunt said.

"My son Brendan has been my right hand man over the past five years and will be helping me out on the road again this year."

NRMA Patrol Glenn Stocker will use his Toyota Hilux to provide the second mobile workshop on the trip. Glenn will travel with NRMA Patrol Wayne Whittaker who is volunteering his services for the first time.

The Variety Bash will conclude on Wednesday 26 August at Silverton, 26.4km from Broken Hill and famous for its association with Mel Gibson's Mad Max movies.
