NRMA To NSW Government : Get With The Program

NRMA Motoring & Services President Wendy Machin today called for the State Government to get with Federal Government funding programs or risk losing invaluable road funding.
The Federal Government's decision to cut funds is a result of the NSW Government's failure to sign up for funds in time and a decision not to honour a Pacific Highway Federal funding agreement," Ms Machin said.

The NSW Government's tardiness in signing the National Building Program agreement gave the Federal Government no alternative but to withdraw maintenance funding for federally funded roads.

Instead, this money will be spent duplicating a section of the Pacific Highway between Grafton and Coffs Harbour.

Ms Machin said the NRMA welcomes any additional funding for the Pacific Highway however the NSW Government's failure to sign the Nation Building Program agreement within the required time frame was inexcusable.

"Ironically it is in fact good news for Pacific Highway users who drive on the Grafton to Coffs Harbour stretch but it's devastating news for regional communities who will miss out on much-needed maintenance funding," Ms Machin said.

"It raises doubts about the NSW Government's ability to plan for, manage and deliver projects and to sign up for offers of future federal funding.

"The handling of this situation does not bode well for Infrastructure Australia either as it raises questions about whether NSW can deliver projects - even when funding is available.

"When it comes to future federal funding for roads, NSW will need to get its house in order sooner rather than later."
