The NRMA has welcomed the NSW Government's decision to drop the number of demerit points from three to one for motorists caught exceeding the speed limit by up to 10 kilometres.
NRMA President Wendy Machin said the changes to the demerit point system were fairer without sacrificing safety.
"This is a good first step to a fairer and safer demerit system," Ms Machin said.
"The NRMA has been calling for a fairer system because someone doing only one km/hr over the limit would lose the same points as someone doing 25 km/hr.
"If you got booked doing just one kilometre over the limit on a public holiday you would lose half your licence - the NRMA has long said that's too harsh."
Ms Machin said the new system was fairer because the hefty demerit point fines would now apply to higher level offences.
"It is now up to the motorist to do the right thing - we now have a fairer system but there is still no justification for speeding of any type."

There are now more reasons to smile. While Roadside Assistance remains at our heart, NRMA Membership now means so much more.
