NRMA Win: School Zone Signs To Be Upgraded

Author: NRMA Motoring & ServicesDate: 29 July 2009

Parents, families and school communities are the winners after the NSW Government yesterday advised the NRMA they will begin replacing faded school zone signs with the NRMA-recommended yellow / green colour.

NRMA Motoring & Services President Wendy Machin said an assessment of 34 school zone signs in the St George region had revealed that less than one in ten are of a high-visibility standard.

"If similar low-visibility findings were found across the State, this would represent around 20,000 signs not complying with the Australian Standard," Ms Machin said.

"Since 2008, the NRMA has been asking the NSW Government to upgrade the State's 22,000 school zone signs to fluorescent yellow / green material which complies with the Australian Standard.

"Up until now, the NSW Roads and Traffic Authority said that fluorescent school zone signs were not necessary.

"Roads Minister Michael Daley should be congratulated for instructing the RTA to immediately start replacing old faded signs with the NRMA-recommended fluorescent yellow / green signs.

"You can't put a price on the safety of children, adults and drivers around school zones.

"The NRMA would like to see the RTA adopt a regular program of school zone audits of each school zone undertaken yearly to identify any issues like trees growing across school zone signs, faded traffic signs, changes required to parking signs and whether upgrades are required for pedestrian crossings."

Ms Machin encouraged concerned residents to report fading school zone signs on the NRMA's RoadTube website - www.roadtube.com.au.

"The NRMA will pass on photos and information about inadequate signs to the RTA," Ms Machin said.
