Park And Ride Win For Glenfield

Park And Ride Win For Glenfield

Author: NRMA Motoring & ServicesDate: 01 September 2009

NRMA Motoring & Services local Director David Bentham has welcomed the announcement of the start of construction of a 700 space multi-story car park at Glenfield railway station.

Mr Bentham said the announcement by Minister for Transport David Campbell was welcome news for South -West Sydney residents who used the station as a commuter link.

"The NRMA has been actively campaigning for more commuter car parking and is pleased the Government is listening to motorists' concerns," Mr Bentham said.

"Public transport will now become a viable option for more Glenfield residents who will be able to drive to their local train station and it will also help get more cars off the road network.

"The car park - scheduled to be completed by the end of 2010 - will also take pressure off nearby stations which also service local commuters.

Last year, the NRMA completed an audit of key Park and Ride facilities in NSW. Part of the audit included a survey of 600 motorists about their transport habits. Almost half said they would use Park and Ride facilities rather than drive to work if more facilities were available.

Mr Bentham said the NRMA's research found more than 60 per cent of motorists surveyed cited availability, affordability and the lack of safe parking facilities as the main reasons why they did not drive to the station and catch the train to work.

"The NSW Government has addressed some of these needs," Mr Bentham said.

"The NRMA will work with the NSW Government to ensure Park and Ride facilities are delivered across the South -West's busiest railway stations."
